What is a good outfit to wear on a plane flight?

I'm going on a flight in summer and want to know what sort of clothes are comfortable to wear on the plane but still look okay. (not to sound shallow or anything) thanks! What is a good outfit to wear on a plane flight?Wear something comfortable, remember your going to in a plane for hours just sitting there! Mabey a t shirt and some cute sweatpants, planes can cold inside so wear something warm. Remember you can be stylish a comfortable at the same time. What is a good outfit to wear on a plane flight?Just wear something comfortable, like a t-shirt, jeans, rubber shoes or sandals. Also, bring a jacket because the air-conditioning can be cold.

Hope this helps :)

Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket?

If that really big guy wont fit on a plane seat then he needs to get the other seat beside obviously. Should airline companies charge him double considering the fact that he is a single human in the most common and logical sense?Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket?Yes. If you require the space of more than one seat, you should pay for it. No, it's not pro-rated either. It is a 1 seat or 2 seat situation. If you take up more than 1 seat, you a basically using 2 seats. You wouldn't want me to squeeze my briefcase in the seat with you, would you? Whether people like to think of it this way or not, airlines ARE in the transportation business in the same way UPS or Fed Ex is. They ARE NOT in the hospitality business, as some people like to believe. If you take up more space than the amount they are providing, you must pay more or find a different airline that will accommodate your needs. If it really bothers people that they have to pay twice as much, then they need to take up less space.Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket?
Of course and some airlines do charge according. Some people booked both seats.

It is only fair to everyone.Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket? If they request ---that is, demand--- to have two seats they definitely should PAY for two seats. Otherwise they can squeeze themselves into one seat. Simple as that.Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket?
I had a flight with a really obese person on my flight from Chicago to Dulles. He sat next to me and to tell the truth it was annoying! I had absolutely no space, he took up both armrest and my legroom. I was pissed beyond belief.

And to the people saying that they should make the seats bigger. No way! Why should an airline make seats larger to make up for a obese persons actions? Why should the airline loose millions if a person cannot control themselves from eating? It is not the airlines fault.

I definately think they should buy either two seats or a business ticket.Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket? This is a serious question and there are legal implications here. I have read stories about it in travel publications. I think they should pay for two seats if their body mass overflows onto another person's space.
Or should he/she pay half price since they're not getting a seat that fully accomodates him/her?Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket?
No. The seats should be made bigger. Also, they do not give a break on the price is you are extremely thin.

Next thing you know they will have two people sharing the same seat if they are small enough to do so.

Airlines are a big rip-off.
If the person is too big to occupy just one seat, then yes, they should be charged for the extra seat. It is not the airlines fault that someone is too big of a wide a#% to fit in one seat and they should not be expected to lose revenue because of it.Should an obese person charged double when buying a plane ticket?
you are insulting and judgemental What do you class as obese? Its only by your eyes you judge By the same token should a thin person be charged and sit 2 in a aeroplane seat then?
Yep, if he is spilling over into my space he should be made to buy an extra seat. Are my rights less then his, we have looked at this vis-a-ve smoking, seatbelts, helmets etc., a line has to be drawn somewhere and I say charge is big fat a$$ for the extra seat.

Yes I know that it is un-charitable and not very PC but whose rights trump whose?
Two seats, two tickets. Simple as that.
I think the airline should make wider seats for obese persons, and not charge extra.
Yes, or at least be required to pay for a 1st class or business class ticket.
They generally do have a weight/size limit at which they'll charge you for a second seat. Why is this important?
Yes. I also think that double leg amputees should be given a discount because they require less legroom.
yeah sure,if his weight is posing some problems to aircraft takeoff,or due to his wight, engines have to give more thrust to take off normally, for which extra fuel has to be there

so for that extra fuel,he should be charged double triple quadruple etc watever u like
Are they allowed to let I.D.I.O.T.S on planes these days

How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?

I am going on a trip to Europe with my family in July and I'm always really shy and embarrassed about telling them that I have to go the bathroom. The fact that it usually involves waking them up doesn't help either. I've never peed on a plane before(easy to avoid to on shorter trips) and would like to keep it that way if at all possible. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?If you are old enough to use a computer, you are old enough to piss on a plane without telling your parents. Just do it.How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
You shouldn't try to hold it in, but if you must, don't drink anything two hours before taking off. Pee right before you board the plane and immediately after getting off. After you land, drink some water so you're not so dehydrated. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip? Why do you need to tell them you have to go to the bathroom? Just stand up and if they ask you where you're going tell them the toilet. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
Dont drink anything and pee before take-off

Or just sit in the aisle seat

Everyone pees, its okHow can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?Go right before you get on the plane and drink the least amount of liquids possible

Why are all planets in our solar system basically on the same plane?

Can anyone explain why all the planets in our solar system seem to be basically on the same plane? If everything is random, this seems too co-incidental. Would the gravatational influence of the other planets have pulled all the planets into a similar plane? Why are all planets in our solar system basically on the same plane? As the cloud of gas and dust that formed our solar system collapsed to form the sun, it began to spin. The spinning motion formed a disk, in which the remaining material formed into the planets and asteroids. This is why they all orbit in the same direction and along the same plane.

Comets are from the Oort cloud, which extends in every direction around the solar system, so their orbits are random, and not on the same plane as the planets. Why are all planets in our solar system basically on the same plane? The technical term for what turkwise is saying is called:

conservation of angular momentum.

and he is correctWhy are all planets in our solar system basically on the same plane? What makes you think random events can not produce predictable results?

Allmost all systems condensed out of large clouds of material.

As they condense and decrease radius the angular momentum of the system is preserved.

That means that the cloud spins faster as it shrinks.

It also compresses onto a disk instead of a ball because it has no centrefugal force except in the plane it is rotating in.

Actually the big question is why are there variations in the sizes of planets, their spins and the planes and eccentricity of their orbits. Why are all planets in our solar system basically on the same plane?
They aren't on the same plane, they do orbit the sun but each plane of orbit is varied just slightly.

Is there a certain age to be able to ride in a plane by yourself?

    I was guessing 18, but I don't really know.

I kind of thought you could at any age, as long as you could get a ticket by yourself and such. What is the legal age to be on a plane by yourself?Getting a ticket by yourself and flying unaccompanied on a plane are two different things. Most airlines have regulations regarding unaccompanied underage travellers, so it is best to check with the airline that you want to fly on to find out what their requirements are. My neice and nephew flew from Italy to the US when they 8 and 10 respectively. This was done with their parents permission and they were escorted directly to me by airline personnel when they arrived. (Obviously, there is no way that they could have purchased those tickets themselves.) So, it is important to have a conversation with the airline to find out what their rules and regulations are. Is it safe for a newborn to travel by plane?

I'm planning to travel overseas 2 wks after I have my baby. It's gonna be a long trip, abt 20 hrs. I already did some research and got positive results but I still would like to know if someone had a personal experiencing traveling by plane with their newborn. Is it safe for a newborn to travel by plane?I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 8%26amp;5 and baby #3 was just born 23 December). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. In addition to that, we do another 8-10 international and domestic flights a year as a family. I have never had any problems with my children on any of the flights. Here are a few tips and suggestions:

1.) As long as your child has had a check-up with the doctor and everything is fine, you are safe to travel with your child almost immediately after birth. Most airlines require that a baby be at least 7 days old, unless you have a medical certificate. I have seen children as young as 1 day old fly. You should call the airline you plan to fly with to see what their policy is because it can vary from airline to airline.

If your child has even a slight cold, the pressure in his/her ears during take-off and landing (even if you do the precaution methods) could leave his/her ears aching for days after the flight.

Most doctors recommend that if anyone is sick (such as being stuffed up or already having an earache), not to take the flight because of the potential damage to the ears. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if they are sick because of this danger.

2.) You will need to have all your baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of his/her notarized birth certificate with you.

Since it is an international flight, you will need a passport and possibly a visa for your child as well.

Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

Another thing you should consider bringing with you is your childs immunization book. That way if any emergency should arise while you are on vacation (no matter where you are) the treating physician will at least have some verifiable information to go on. This book also usually includes what your child is allergic to, and some small but very helpful notes from your doctor.

Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

3.) A car seat is not mandatory, but is highly recommended. Since your child is under two, you are allowed to hold him as a lap child, meaning that he will have to sit in your lap the entire time. The Flight Attendants should place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Depending on space and availability, the Flight Attendants might give you a bassinet that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device.

I do advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help your child sleep, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit.

A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant or child safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use. Almost all car seats pass this requirement.

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

If you haven't booked a separate seat for your child, be nice on check-in and see if they can "block" the seat next to you. They will then only use it if they absolutely need it.

4.) You can take a stroller and gate check it. It will not count towards your checked luggage. This means that you will be able to use it all the way up until the time that you board, and one of the handlers will take it from you at your departure gate, tag it, and put it in a special compartment for you. When you exit the plane, it will be waiting for you at the door as well.

There are many products out there designed to help the traveling family. Here's a product that can attach to most car seats so that you can use it as a stroller and get it through the airport more easily. http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_k鈥?/a>

5.) Not all children have a problem with the pressure changes in their ears. If yours does however you'll want to know how to help. For take-offs and landings (the WHOLE way up, and starting from the BEGINNING, or TOP of descent), the best ways to alleviate ear pressure are to:

*If your child is nursing, nurse him/her

*Give him/her something to drink (formula, water - it doesn't matter)

*Give him/her a pacifier to suck on

*Place hot damp towels (usually like the ones distributed to first and business class before take-off and landing to freshen up with - just ask a flight attendant for them) or paper towels that have been soaked in hot water and wrung out, at the bottom of two paper or styrofoam cups, then hold the cups over the ears

*Gently but with some pressure, rub his/her neck repeatedly from the chin to the base of the neck. This will cause a swallowing motion that will relieve pressure build-up in the ears.

You can also try using a decongestant. It is always best to check with your doctor before using any type of medications though, to make sure you are using the one best suited to your childs needs. I personally have found pain relief medications don't really help, and at least in my experience, decongestants are a waste of money.

6.) As long as your child is with you, you are able to take as much formula, breast milk, or regular milk that you will need for you child for the duration of the time you will spend in the airport and on the flight (as long as it is within reason). And no, you will NOT have to taste it - no matter what form you bring it in.

All that you must do is:

    1. Separate the milk from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size (1 liter) zip-top bag.

    2. Declare you have the items to one of the Security Officers at the security checkpoint.

    3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening

    http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/c鈥?/a>

New regulations also allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz (100ml), -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food, yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. with you also as long as they are in containers less than 3oz (100ml)

    http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/p鈥?/a>

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

7.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use. One thing I always like to carry with me is hand sanitizer! I always wipe the trays down with that (followed by a baby wipe) and use it for my kids after taking them to the bathroom (even though they wash their hands). I know that airplane bathrooms are not the cleanest, so that is why I try to e vigilant.

Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case s/he gets sick, spills something on him/herself, or in case your luggage gets lost.

Bring any medications that you might need for your child should s/he get sick or that s/he takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz (100ml) rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making him/her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well. I have also seen where it backfires; a parent gives their child a dose of Benedryl to make them sleep, but instead it gets the child more hyper and the parents get absolutely no rest on the flight (and neither does anyone else).

You should be respectful of other passengers and always change your child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small. Usually the bathrooms with the diapers beds are the handicap ones (they usually tend to be toward the rear of the plane), so they tend to be a little bit bigger and it does help.

I also know some people who say that instead of using the changing table, they say to put the toilet seat down, use the toilet as a seat for yourself, and lay the baby across your knee to change their diaper.

To make it easier on yourself, make sure that you undress your baby so that s/he has just a diaper on while at your seat. Grab your diaper, wipes, and ointment or baby powder (whatever you use for changing your childs diaper) and head to the bathroom. This will help to make the procedure faster and easier.

Try to change your childs diaper as close to boarding as possible. This will help to make you baby feel fresh and more comfortable for take-off (which could also mean less problems).

8.) Make sure to pack one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal. I always bring a small pillow and blanket from home for my children (even now) because I know 100% that they are clean, and my children are accustomed to them.

9.) Don't worry about what the other passengers are going to think or say should your baby cry. This will only add stress, which your child can pick up on, and it could make him/her cry longer and harder. Instead, just relax, and handle the situation like you would if you were at home. Most times the other passengers are very understanding anyways and some will even try to help you. Which reminds me, if help is offered to you, TAKE it!

Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?

I recently flew to Europe and had a connection in Amsterdam. The first plane was late and I had to literally run to the next gate to make my connection. I did make it, but was sure that they did not have enough time to transfer my luggage. To my great surprise, my luggage arrived at the final destination together with me! How did they do it, is there a highly efficient luggage transfer system in airports? Is it possible that my checked-in luggage traveled by a different route?Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?Yes your checked in baggage travels with you on the same plane. When they load the luggage if someone is transferring to another flight ,they put the luggage closer to the unloading door so they know which baggege to remove.Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?
yes and no. 50% of the time it does, and 50% of the time it doesn'tDoes checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?Your luggage will be on the same plane as you, unless you actually miss the plane. If you made it, your luggage should have made it as well. It doesn't ALWAYS work that way, as people who have lost their baggage will tell you. But that's the way it's supposed to work.Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?
Luggage travels with passenger, this is a Golden Rule. So, if there's a bomb, the bomber dies too.Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?yes
It just depends on the flight.. usually for domestic flights ( within the country) luggage is loaded onto the same aircraft, but on international flights many times the luggage is loaded onto another... hope this helps!Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?
Your luggage ALWAYS travels in the same aircraft as you. This is ALWAYS and there are NO EXCEPTIONS unless your luggage is lost in the system and ends up going to Nairobi when you are on a flight to Singapore.
It was on tarmac being pulled by a little truck at faster speed %26amp; no people in way than you were. It is amazing though. I like to sit in plane %26amp; watch for my luggage to be loaded. Same plane unless you lugguage is lost.Does checked-in luggage normally travel on the same plane as the passanger?
Luggage travels in the cargo hold of the same plane as the passengers. Duh.
yes the luggage travel with the passenger.and there is a highly advanced system by which the containers filled with luggage is been shifted to the other planes by cranes and that is how even before you change your connecting flight your luggage does.
Your luggage usually flys with you.
oh trust me they have plenty of time and personnel to transfer your luggage
I asked once if they could please send one bag to Bahamas and one to Hawaii. They told me "No that's against the rules". I said "Why not? You did last week"
You can't count on it . Last week my son arrived less than 3 hours for a flight ; so he was put on another one . While I waited at the destination , I didn't know it at the time-but his luggage was grouped near a wall in baggage with dozens of other bags, awaiting his arrival .. It turns out that his luggage made the earlier flight . I thought it was the luggage we were worried about . This made no sense .

  • Can you check in your laptop when traveling by plane and wrap it in bubble wrap?

I will be travelling from US to ASIA.. Can you share some experience or give sources on whether it is alright to check -in a laptop because I don't want to carry it with me in the plane.

Thank you so much for your help! Can you check in your laptop when traveling by plane and wrap it in bubble wrap? You could but I wouldn't. Airlines will not cover the laptop if your bag either went missing or if it was destroyed. Also, when your bag gets screened, TSA wi have to unwrapp your bag to scan the laptop separetly. There is a huge chance that when this happens they will forget to put it back in your bag. I see this happen far too often and the customer will blame the airline. Finally you don't want to risk your bag getting broken into. This also happens way too often. The airline will assume no liability for your laptop so you should just take it with you.Can you check in your laptop when traveling by plane and wrap it in bubble wrap?I would not do that if I were you. Have you seen the way they treat our bags? They just throw them around as if no one puts anything fragile or valuable in their checked bags. By all means, bring it on the plane. You don't want to open up your suitcase and find a broken laptop, do you? Also, your luggage could get lost and your laptop would be only God knows where. If you really have to you could check it but I don't think anyone with any common sense would recommend doing that. Can you check in your laptop when traveling by plane and wrap it in bubble wrap?If I were you I would not put your laptop in your checked luggage. Laptops are not covered under what an airline is liable for. Especially if you are travelling to Asia from the US, there are too many hands and connecting points your bag has to go through. Can you check in your laptop when traveling by plane and wrap it in bubble wrap?
You can, but it's a bad idea.

If it is damaged or stolen, you're just out of luck. No one else will be responsible for it. Carry it with you!

How do I travel with a snake on a plane?

Hey, I'm a college student with a pet corn snake, he's only little over a foot long. My college is about 6 hours away from home so I usually fly. I can't leave my snake here with anyone over breaks so I was wondering if anyone had any experience or ideas on traveling on a plane with a snake. I am flying Delta and JetBlue. Would it be ok for him to fly? Do you think there would be an extra fee, like if I were to bring a dog on board?

It's that or stick him in a pillowcase under your shirt and hope nobody notices!!!

BTW - that guy above me copied my "ship as cargo" statement after I posted. I hate people who cheat like that. How do I travel with a snake on a plane? You will have to check your air carrier. I've heard that in many cases they will not let reptiles into their cargo area.

A friend of mine wanted to take her leopard gecko with her, but they told her no.

There is a lot of extras that go about putting a reptile on a plane, and in many cases the airlines do not want to deal with it. Try shipping it via FedEx or UPS. Find a breeder to ship it for you. They can ship via overnight and receive it by 10:30 the following morning. This is the best bet.

  • If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?

Specifically, I'm asking what would happen if two engines on one wing died suddenly, but the other two engines on the other wing were okay. My cousin and I are betting $20 on whether or not the plane can be controlled and flown, or at least glided, to safety. And I'm just curious about what a pilot would do in that situation. The more details the better! If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?immediate descent to a lower altitude where the air is thicker (better lift), a ton of yaw with the rudder pedal, an easy way to descend in that situation would be to perform a "side slip"If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?
At cruising altitude, it would be a major event, but it should definitely result in a normal landing. This assumes, of course, that there is no other damage or other failures. For example, if one or more of the engines had an uncontained failure, parts of the engine could sever hydraulic and electrical lines making the picture much worse.

The pilots would point the plane at the nearest airport and execute a controlled and gradual descent. Once they are low enough to attempt a restart, they likely would attempt one unless it was clear that a restart was impossible. They would have to maintain a high enough speed to ensure enough rudder authority to keep the plane straight as the asymmetric thrust would try to turn the plane pretty severely. If necessary, the inboard engine could be kept at a higher power level than the outboard engine.

There is no reason a basically normal landing shouldn't be possible, though with a higher approach speed used. Use of thrust reversers on landing would probably not be advisable. A long, dry runway would be nice. Fortunately, assuming on other problems, they could fly as far as they needed to select a suitable airport. If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?A 4 engined jet, i.e A340 / 747 can still fly perfectly, even with 2 engines but it will yaw, which means it will turn to the side with less thrust (side with dead engine), but this can be compensated using the rudder, or vertical tail.

An airliner can glide to a suitable landing strip and make a safe landing. One engine always needs to be on to supply power to the instruments and controls, but in an emergency, the ram air turbine can kick in. The ram air turbine is a small propeller that generates limited electrical power for the instruments %26amp; flight controls that would make a emergency landing possible

A good example would be EL AL flight 1862, where 2 engines fell off the right wing, which damaged the leading edge. It would've landed safely if the engines didn't fall off. The main cause of the crash is the damage to the leading edge of the wing which disrupted the airflow and reduced lift.If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?
If it is in cruise flight at altitude, the airplane will descend to an altitude where the engines produce enough thrust to fly. It will remain controllable.

When I was flying the BAe-146, we'd do 2 engine approaches in the simulator for proficiency... no walk in the park, but it was manageable. If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?if they are within a safe distance then they could glide to a landing at an airport.

however if they are not then if they lower the thrust on the engines as well as turning both rudders in the opposite direction they could force a forward flight. turning in the direction of the two working engines would probably be really tricky ;P
The "plane geek" got it all wrong about Air Transat -

The causes, the technical explanations, the location etc.

A geek or a nerd - I do not know -If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?
Yes, it can. It would yaw like crazy to start with, but quick rudder application would cure that. The pilot would declare an emergency and land at the nearest suitable airport.
i would say the pilot would land it.If a plane loses power to 2 engines on a 4 engine aircraft, what needs to be done to keep flying?
A four-engine aircraft can typically fly on just two engines. It requires skill on the part of the pilot, who must know how to react quickly and correctly when the failures occur, but it's still possible to fly and land the airplane.

The loss of performance will typically require that the aircraft descend to a lower altitude (true of just about any engine failure). The pilot must correct for the very strong tendency of the aircraft to swing to one side (the side with the dead engines) when all the thrust is coming from one side of the airplane. But the airplane will continue to fly safely. Gliding isn't necessary unless all engines fail (and airplanes can glide to a landing safely, too).

In the case of jet engines, a double failure due to independent mechanical failures is essentially unknown, because of the very high reliability of jet engines. Multiple failures only occur if there's some sort of common cause, such as fuel exhaustion, multiple bird strikes, volcanic ash, etc. (and all of these have happened in real life on some occasions).

As far as more vs. fewer engines is concerned, the greater the number of engines, the higher the likelihood that at least one will fail. However, even though the chances of one failure go up, the chances of all power being lost decrease dramatically, and as long as the airplane can fly with one or more engines inoperative, multiple engines are safer.

Suppose you have an engine that has a chance of failure of one in 100,000. If you have a single-engine plane, your chance of having at least one engine failure is also 1 in 100,000, and so is your chance of having a total engine failure (since you have only the one engine). On the other hand, if you have a twin-engine airplane, the chance of at least one failure is slightly less than 1 in 50,000, but your chance of losing all engines drops to 1 in 10,000,000,000! So you are way better off with two engines, provided that the airplane can fly on just one engine (if it can't, then having two engines is actually worse).

As far as I know, there have never been any accidents in multiple-engine jet airliners that were due to independent mechanical failures of multiple engines. It just doesn't happen. In the olden days of multiple piston engines, though, it did indeed happen, since even the best piston engines are way less reliable than jet engines鈥攚hich is one reason why jets are so common today in commercial transport aircraft.
Well whoever bet that "nothing" would happen - would win the bet. Sure, there would be an adjustment made by the pilot so that the plane would fly striaght and steady. However, a passenger probably wouldn't notice other then one side of the airplane didn't have any engine noise. In today's commercial aircraft, the engines are so power (and reliable) that most planes, even the one's with 4 engines, could fly on one engine.

Another thing that would happen is that the aircraft speed would decrease - there woullod be a decline in total engine power. Your question of "can commercial aircraft glide" - the answer is that is YES. As a matter of fact there is a well documented flight in which a Canadian Airline - Air Transat flying from Toronto to Lisbon ran out of gas over the Atlantic. It was "pilot error", the pilot emptied the tanks when he was transferring fuel from one tank in the wing to another - the aircraft an Airbus 330 is a twin engine - shut down. Since today's airplanes are reliant on computers and electronics that many of the electronic systems are "linked" to the engines - so when the engines went out, many of the important systems went down. Airbus installs an emergency system in which a tiny propeller drops from the bottom of the airplane and the prop generates enough electricity to run some of the basic, but important, electronic systems. I just thought that was the neatest thing - talk about thinking ahead by the engineers. Luckily, the plane had enough altitude and was able to "glide" to the Canary Island and no one died. So there is some "fact" that you can tell your cousin or "hide from your cousin".

It's funny you asked this question. I'm a "plane geek" and a very good friend of mine had thought the same thing about if "one engine went out of a two engine plane, you couldn't fly." I kept telling him "Dude, you always want to have 2 engines instead of 1 - the more engines, the better." I don't know why he didn't believe me, especially since it was "plane oriented" but I kept telling him. Sure enough the guy dating his sister was a pilot and flew my friend and himself from DC to Atlantic City. He had asked the question to the pilot and the pilot said the same thing as I told him. You want as many engines as you can on a plane and you can fly on only 1.

How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?don't drink much .. but that is a long flight and if you have to go than you have to goHow can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
Just tell them that you need to stretch your legs... its a good idea anyway because longer flights/drives (long periods of inactivity) increase your risk for blood clots (deep vein thrombosis). The recommendation is to get up once an hour anyway, so you can conveniently dissapear to a bathroom in another part of the airplane cabin.

Also, your body really needs to stay hydrated to handle the stress of flying long distances. The air tends to be quite dry, so people tend to be at a risk of dehydration. Generally, you'll feel better at the end of a long flight if you've walked the aisles and occasionally gone pee.How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?LOL Last week you didn't want to tell your mom and sister you had to pee in the car. It depends were you are in the U.S ( assuming you live here) But To avoid going to the restroom frequently ( Because Europe is very long trip so you will eventually have to go) Just avoid drinking a lot of liquids about half an hour before the flight and make sure to use the air port restroom before you board the flight. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip? How old are you ? Don't drink any liquids for about 2 hrs. before the flight; Pee before you board the plane, and dont drink any liquids while flying !How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
Don't drink anything. And what's embarassing about you natural body functions. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
Just make sure you get an aisle seat, then when you need to go you can just get up and not say anything. Or, if you can't manage that, just get up and say "excuse me" when you're trying to get past them. Also, unless the plane ride is very long, you may be able to simply use the restroom in the airport before and after the flight.

But, don't go out of your way to avoid drinking beforehand, you can get dehydrated that way.
    You use the airplane bathroom.

Dude you aint gonna make it! From NY to London takes 5-6 hours alone. Imagine if you're flying into Rome from Chicago!

  • Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?

My gf and I plan on visiting my homestate of Vermont for the summer. We live in Texas now and I was wondering if it would be cheaper with a plane or the car. Another option is to fly up and drive back...any help?Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip? It's hard to give a precise answer without knowing a few things, but it should not be too hard for you to estimate:

Flying, you will have the price of your ticket, and possibly long term parking fees at your point of departure. Of course if someone can take you to the airport, that's not an issue. You might have a meal in the terminal before your flight, and that should cover most of it.

Driving, you will need to have a realistic estimate of what it costs to operate your vehicle per mile, including gas, wear and tear, depreciation, etc. The IRS allows in the vicinity of $.505/mile to be claimed for tax purposes, so that should give a starting point. Then with a trip of that length you will probably spread the trip over at least two and more likely 3 or more days each way. You will need to plan for motels, campgrounds, or whatever your tastes favor. You will probably have at least two meals each, per day, maybe more, plus snacks. These are some of the big items.

Another consideration is that traveling by aircraft is much safer. Yes, I agree that nothing is likely to happen on either trip, but if it is a concern, the airplane is arguably safer.

Another intangible is the enjoyment factor. Personally I love road trips, despite an aviation background, and drive whenever possible, even though as you'll find, it's likely to be more costly.

I know I didn't give you a true cost analysis, but only you have the missing parts to complete that puzzle. Have fun and enjoy your trip, whichever way you chose to do it.Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?
Factor in hotel, fuel and vacation time from work.

One way tickets are expensive.Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?Personally, I believe flying is the cheaper way to go. Southwest is running specials right now advertising $29-$99 one way tickets. You could fly into Manchester, NH and then drive to Vt. It just depends if you have the time to drive. Driving from Texas to Vt is an easy 2 day drive and it can be challenging if you go in the winter. Good luck on your decision.Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?
By almost any measurement, flying is cheaper and safer (considering that you get more exposure to harm being on the road for so long) but driving is more scenic.

The simple logic is that a typical airliner is designed for fast and efficient 'bulk' transportion over relatively long distances. Comparable ground transportation would be a greyhound bus or a train.

Perhaps a minivan filled with passengers and driven by a skilled driver could also be competitive by the time you factor in the actual cost per passenger, but not with 2 people on board.Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?At $3.00 a gallon a trip like that would take probably 5 tanks of gas each way and the cost of hotels and meals and your nerves must be figured in. That's an awfully long car trip. Flying will no doubt be the most economical way of going both for your pocket book and your time off especially if you shop well for your ticket.

.Car or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?
    that far

man flying especially if u fly southwest

but my only problem is changing the tempatures soooooooo fast i can get sick real eaislyCar or plane, what would generally be a cheaper trip?
In recent years, I've found that Amtrak, though it takes longer, is far more affordable than flying and saves the hassle of driving.

Greyhound is another option. I've been seeing ads where they say $99 to anywhere in the U.S.

I've never peed on a plane before(easy to avoid to on shorter trips) and would like to keep it that way if at all possible. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?Have your bladder surgically removed. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
Pee right before you get on the plain, silly.

Even if you don't feel like you have to, 9 times out of 10 you have a good amount of urine that will naturally come out if you go to the bathroom and try. This way, your bladder will be completely empty when you get on the plane.

The I would suggest not drinking very much while you're on the plane.

In addition to the answers others have already given (i.e. drink less water before and during the flight, go to the bathroom before the flight - which I always follow),

try to get an isle seat or one closest to the isle. Then you have only a few people to disturb or can hop over very carefully if possible. How can I avoid needing to pee on a plane trip?
just get up and go to the restroom, you don't need permission for that.

the plane has a restroom no one can see what your doing. if you don't want to have to crawl over people to get out, take an aisle seat and no

one will be bothered when you get up. and if their asleep they won't know you did anyway. your being silly, everyone pees, its a normal bodily

function. you don't need permission to do it unless your 2 or 3 and someone needs to go with you.

What are the best sweets to suck on a plane to stop your ears hurting?

I get really bad ear pain when landing on plane journeys. What sweets for you are the best or does it not really matter? What are the best sweets to suck on a plane to stop your ears hurting? The harder the better as it is the swallowing that relieves the "pain", so a mint is better than gum. Simply swallowing will pretty much do the same job, so nothing is really needed. If you have a cold or feel congested you should take meds to relieve these symptoms prior to boarding. What are the best sweets to suck on a plane to stop your ears hurting?
What you are doing is helping to equalize the pressure in you inner ear. Sucking any kind of sweet can help as it moves your jaw around. You can also try yawning and moving your jaw from side to side with your mouth wide open. finally try holding your nose and blowing gently with your mouth shut. (This is what SCUBA divers have to do when they descend and ascend for exactly the same reason). Do not blow too hard!. If you hear a bit of popping and crackling the exercise is working.

Yawning and blowing actually work better than sucking the sweet. Finally don't wait for the pain to start, do the exercise every few minutes during descent as gradual equalization is better than letting it hurt and then trying as there will be more work for your ears to do.What are the best sweets to suck on a plane to stop your ears hurting? It's the swallowing that matters - it allows your euastacian tubes to open to balance the pressure across your eardrum. Anything that makes you swallow will do that - you can even just swallow. What are the best sweets to suck on a plane to stop your ears hurting?
gum, jelly beans, %26amp; gummies. Those work for me and they work pretty good besides there deliciouse

How many animals are allowed per person on a plane?

I'm moving to Colorado and I'm wondering how many pets I can take with me on a plane. Is there a certain amount that is allowed? I have 3 birds and I'm getting 1 more. I have to take them all with me. Does size depend? I have 3 cockatiels and getting 1 more. How many animals are allowed per person on a plane? You can usually take a reasonable number of pets, provided you pay for them and they are properly caged. Contact the airline you intend to fly with and ask their advice. They can tell you what sort of pack/cage you will need for the birds, how much it will cost, and whether any vet certificates are required. The birds will travel in the cargo hold, not in the cabin. The cargo hold is always specially warmed when animals are flying, so the birds will be quite comfortable. How many animals are allowed per person on a plane?Every airline and aircraft type has his own maximum ....

There is also a maximum size to the cage. But 4 birds shouldnt be too big of a problem with any aircraft, as long as you are not flying with some chessna kind of plane.

Its faily expensive though, and the birds will have to be loaded in the baggage - holds.

If you are looking at doing it cheap , give them a map and tell them to fly not to close to the plane :)How many animals are allowed per person on a plane?8

    1. Planes are safer than cars statistically

    2. You will not leave the airports during layovers

    3. You will use the airport escort service for juveniles so you will be walked to each gate

    4. You wont talk to strangers

    5. You will pay for it

Tired of the TSA hassle could I chapter a plane instead?

I'm tired of all the TSA security hassles, and I wonder

if I would charter an private plane would TSA still be involved?

(would my luggage be searched then too?Tired of the TSA hassle could I chapter a plane instead?Nope, you'd be able to drive your car right up to the airplane, get in while line rats and flight crew load your bags.

Even with just a King Air, you're also looking at about $1100/hour with a fuel surcharge, on top of any catering you want, and the mark up on that, plus the airport and FBO charges, with a 2 hour minimum. If you're not coming back the next day, you're also paying for the airplane to deadhead home and then back out to you so you can pay to fly back home.

What does it mean when you dream about a plane crash?

I always have dreams where I see a plane crash and I run to the crash and try to pull the pilot out, but he's unconscious and too heavy for me to move. What does it mean when you dream about a plane crash?Plane crashing has been fact and somehow that fact lurked into your subconscious mind and translate into symbol of insecurity.

However, you may have more than just insecurity. Projecting yourself going to the crash and pull the pilot may symbolize the lack of control and that is a reflection of low self confidence in you. Notice that you project pilot, not any person. That is a symbolic way to say you want to concentrate things in a whole. Pilot is the head of the control of air plane. Not able to pull him out really means that you can't control or in lack of control in reality. What does it mean when you dream about a plane crash?it somehow always gets into your thoughts thats what i'm thinking.

What unit used to measure the incline of a plane?

What unit describes the incline of a plane?

Is it degree of the slope? Say "the incline of the hill is 45 degrees" is that correct? If not, then what unit is used to describe the steepness of the incline? ThanksWhat unit used to measure the incline of a plane? When we describe a line on a coordinate system using a slope-intercept type form, slope is the ratio of two lengths, so the unit "cancels out" and the slope has no unit. In practical terms, the way you express a real-world incline probably depends on what information you want to convey. Describing it in degrees is one way, or you could use a percentage - railroads, for example, often describe a "2% grade," for example, to describe a stretch of track that rises by 2% of its length. What unit used to measure the incline of a plane?degrees or radians tells you the angle of incline which implies steepness

What should you do after you get off the plane when traveling abroad?

At the end of the year I'm going to London and this will be my first time traveling abroad. The thing I don't get is when I get off the plane.

Where do I go to show my passport and do they make you go to customs after you get your luggage? What do they do at customs? Can you please explain this to me?

Thank you. What should you do after you get off the plane when traveling abroad?Assuming you're leaving from the USA....

At USA, you go through your normal routine. When you land in London, you then go through customs. Here is when you present your passport, they match your picture to your face, and maybe take a picture of you. They will also stamp your passport. Nothing serious. Then you go through baggage.

You only go through customs once, which is at the country you arrive in (most of the time)What should you do after you get off the plane when traveling abroad?First thing to do is empty your bladder.

If you fly into the uk you pass trough border control, get your passport scanned, pick up your bag from the luggage belt, stroll trough nothing to declare and find transport into town.

How to make a paper plane that flies really FAR?

For my physics project, I have to make a plane that flies very far. It doesn't have to fly high, do tricks, etc. It just has to fly as far of a distance as possible. Can you give me a link to a website or a YouTube video or something, that has instructions as to how I can make an airplane that flies far. How does it work when ppl leave carry-on luggage on the ramp before boarding the plane?

I want to fly with only my carry-on. I see people every time I fly leaving small suitcases before boarding that are sometime waiting for them when we got off the plane. How does that work as carry-on? Does it cost anything? I can't find anything on the airline sites about this. How does it work when ppl leave carry-on luggage on the ramp before boarding the plane? When you are at the gate tell the gate agent you want to "door check" or "gate check" your carry-on. It doesn't cost anything.

They will normally give you a baggage tag (often pink) that you attach to your carry-on (you keep the stub). Then put your carry-on in the designated place before boarding the flight. When the flight lands at your destination you exit the aircraft and wait (usually in the jetway) for the ground crew to deliver the "gate checked" bags.

Note that you can take your carry-on into the aircraft with you as long as it fits in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you. However, airlines today tend to use "regional jets" for many routes and regular-size carry-ons won't fit in the aircraft's overhead storage or under the seat. How does it work when ppl leave carry-on luggage on the ramp before boarding the plane? You are allowed 2 personal items on the plane. If, the carry-on luggage is to large to fit under your seat or in the overhead bin they will give you a tag for you carry-on. You would drop you luggage off at the jet bridge before your flight. You would then pick-up you luggage when you exit the plane. If, you have a connecting flight or flights it is important to remember to pick it up on the jet bridge after each flight. How does it work when ppl leave carry-on luggage on the ramp before boarding the plane? These are only for regional jets, turboprops, and other small aircraft.

These bags are within the carry on limits of the main airline (for their overhead bins like 737, 747) but are too big for regional jet overhead bins. So these bins are tagged to go under and are picked up when you get off the aircraft. And no they don't charge.

How fast is it moving at the top of its curve? You need to provide the velocity at which it was projected.

However, if we assume that velocity to be v, then the velocity at the top of its trajectory will be:

    v cos (55)

Explanation: The velocity v can be broken down into two components,

    v cos (55) - Horizontal component

    v sin (55) - Vertical component

At the top if its trajectory, the vertical component will become zero, as it wouldn't be moving up or down. After that point it becomes negative. • Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane?

As a passenger on a plane you are forbidden from using your cell phone while the plane is flying. What is the real reason for this rule? I heard that the FAA was considering allowing cell phones to be used but that their use would bother other passengers. So .. is it an interference issue or something else? Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane? Some older cell phones do in fact cause interference with the plane's instruments. Also cell phones and all other electronic devices are a distraction to passengers; they ask you to turn everything off during takeoff and landing so that you can be as alert and attentive as possible, in case there is a crash or emergency, because most accidents happen during either takeoff or landing.

As for future cell phone usage... the FAA would need to work with all of the other regulatory officials to carve out a frequency allocation for a cellular carrier to provide service at high altitude and speed. The current frequencies assigned to carriers like Sprint and Verizon aren't very reliable at high altitude. Plus, the current cell equipment (towers and etc) is not designed to serve very large areas. When you are going 500mph, you would be jumping from tower to tower very rapidly which would cause dropped calls. So between not having an approved frequency for high-speed/high-altitude use and not having the proper equipment, I just don't see this happening any time soon.

And personally I do not WANT to see that happen. I spend a lot of time in planes. It is hard enough to put up with my neighbor who is practically seated on my lap. I don't need to be stuck in the middle of their conversation about what to have for dinner, either! I would expect that, if the FAA does allow this, we'll see airlines creating special "no cell phone" sections or even entire "quiet" flights, just like many major commuter train systems have done. Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane?
In 1991, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned passengers from using their cell phones while on board an airplane that is in flight. The ban was instituted because the FCC suspected that the radio frequency emitted by cell phones could malfunction an airplane's equipment systems. In complying with this rule, different airlines have instituted different policies about when phones can be turned on and off. In 2005, the FCC announced that it might consider lifting the ban on the use of cell phones on airplanes, with certain restrictions. Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane? No but an air martial will arest youWill use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane?
no b/c on mythbusters , they tried it and it didn't. but they still say don't try it.Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane?Lol, I am quoting Mythbusters too ... the conclusion there was that it is possible, though unlikely, but recommend against it. Also on the show, they mentioned an incident a few years where it was indeed proven that cell phone usage at a critical moment in landing did indeed cause the crash killing everyone aboard.... in this case I'd rather err on the side of caution! Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane?
No but it will interfere with the other passengers who may vent their wrath on the user. Who wants to sit next to a moron on a mobile for six to 12 hours? Will use of a cell phone on a plane really interfere with the plane?
Well, regardless of whether it would interfere with the plane, it will get you arrested, so one way or the other your trip is messed up.

A few years ago a plane in Switzerland crashed, and investigators found that the autopilot went offline at the same time a passenger received a text message. That doesn't prove anything, but as they say, better safe than plastered against a mountainside.

What determines the service ceiling for a jet or plane?

I'm trying to estimate the service ceiling or max altitude for a particular jet or plane. What dictates the altitude of an aircraft? What determines the service ceiling for a jet or plane?1. Amount of lift provided upto a given altitude where this is surpassed.

    2. exceeding the altitude in which the engine is getting enough O2 for combustion.

Either one can be the limit. Most of the time it is probably the engines running out of oxygen........

..What determines the service ceiling for a jet or plane? The size and configuration of the wing and how much weight it will lift in the air space it occupies, as you go higher the air gets thinner and eventually the wing won't provide lift for that particular wing at some point.
