How hard does it have to snow for a plane to get canceled?

its snowing right now its kind of sticking and my brother is going thursday on a plane and what if the plane gets canceled? does it have to snow a inch or somthing? How hard does it have to snow for a plane to get canceled? It's not so much the snow amount - the ploughs can usually keep the runway clear of that. But in a storm, especially with wet snow (not powder), the combination of poor visibility, slippery runway (braking problems) and ice forming on the runway can make it unsafe to land. And if the airport stays open the take-off / landing rate will be lower, meaning some planes can't get a slot.

Snow today should not cause problems on Thursday. Snow on Wednesday night or Thursday morning is what you need to watch for!How hard does it have to snow for a plane to get canceled? The mere fact that snow is falling is not a problem in itself. The key considerations are runway conditions and aircraft conditions. If the runway is or can be kept relatively clear and snow can be effectively removed from aircraft, and there is no storm activity associated with the snow, aircraft can depart. If runway conditions are very poor (icy and slippery) or there is so much snow falling that the aircraft cannot be kept clean, or bad weather or heavy icing conditions await any aircraft taking off, then flights may be delayed.

It's important that the runway be clean and safe, and that the aircraft not have ice collecting on it, and that the weather be reasonably good. If these conditions are met, aircraft can depart; if they can't, it's safer to wait. How hard does it have to snow for a plane to get canceled? It requires pretty bad weather to cancel flights, just snow is not an issue.

I remember many years ago, sitting at an airport. Weather was terrible and all flights delayed/on hold. Hours passed by. It was an eerie silence. Every now and then, a speaker voice informed that due to the weather no flights will arrive or depart.

Then, suddenly. "Finnair flight AYxxx has landed and will be arriving to gate xx".

Finn pilots don't take no for an answer :-)

Well, slightly off-topic but snow alone will ususally not cause cancelled flights. How hard does it have to snow for a plane to get canceled?
Thursday is DAYS from now and anything can happen. It's much too soon to worry about it.

But to answer your question, how much snow it takes to be an issue depends on where you are talking about. An inch of snow would shut Atlanta down for a LONG time. You could dump a foot of snow on Minneapolis and they would hardly blink.
