A plane can fly 455 mph against the wind and 515 mph with the wind. What is the speed of the wind and groundspeed of the airplane?

Please explain. Thanks!A plane can fly 455 mph against the wind and 515 mph with the wind. What is speed of the wind and groundspeed?let the plane's ground speed be s

and let the wind's velocity be w

From the questions 2 equation are derived.

1. s + w = 515 mph

2. s - w = 455 mph

Solve this system of equation by either substitution or elimination. I will show you elimination because it will be the easiest.

Eq 1+ Eq 2 and getting

s+w+(s-w)=515+455

2s=970

s=485

Sub s into either equation 1 or equation 2 to solve for w, and if you have done it correctly, w=30

Therefore, the speed of the wind is 30 mph and the plane's ground speed is 485 mph.
