Why cant I turn on an electronic device when a plane is landing?

Why do flight attendants make you turn off electronic devices when a plane lands or takes off? Seriously, what damage can my IPod do to to a multimillion dollar plane?Why cant I turn on an electronic device when a plane is landing?The answer in reality, your ipod will not do any damage. Yes, it is a federal law to make sure your devices are shut off. The theory is that they COULD do something the aircraft's electronics. That being said, I'm a pilot of small aircraft and we've tested (on clear, nice days of course where instruments were not needed) by holding up a cell phone right next to the avionics and there was absolutely no effect.



I've also seen an episode of mythbusters where they did a bunch of stuff and I think they finally got the instruments to budge after doing some highly unrealistic possibilities (unless your a terrorist but we'll discount those wackos). So there is an extremely extremely small possibility it could do something although very unlikely. ANYTHING that contains a clock circuit, anything with the simplest receiver, any microprocessor, radiate.



This RF radiation can be spurious and can cause interference to other electronics devices.



The games, iPods, computers, are all covered by the FCC rules %26amp; regulations under the FCC Part 15 as incidental radiators.



And as such, you are required by FEDERAL LAW to turn off all incidental radiators when potential interference is possible.

The idea is to prevent any interference with the aircraft's electronics while the it's taking off and landing. As a passenger do you really want to take the chance of interfering with the electronics of an aircraft weighting 200,000 pounds traveling about 175 mph only a 1000 feet off the ground?
